A salamander that never grows up, can regrow its own limbs, and is nearly extinct in the wild. Meet one of Earth's strangest survivors.

   Find its home on a map

   Xochimilco, a network of ancient canals near Mexico City. Zoom in and note what surrounds it now.

   Learn the superpower

   Axolotls can regrow legs, tails, spinal cord — even parts of their heart and brain. Scientists study them to understand human healing.

   Meet the gills

   The feathery pink branches on its head are external gills. Draw them: 6 stalks, 3 on each side.

   Draw your own axolotl

   Wide smile, tiny black eyes, four little limbs, long finned tail. Give it a color that doesn't exist in nature.

   Post it to the art wall

   Head to Spark Studio and pin your axolotl on the wall.

   Why it matters

   Fewer than 1000 axolotls live wild. Clean water = axolotl survival. Name one thing your family could do to keep water clean.
